Xi'an Neighborhood Guide — Where to Go and What Each Area Offers
A practical guide to Xi'an's neighborhoods: the walled city, the Muslim Quarter, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area, High-Tech Zone, and beyond. What each area is actually like.
Understanding Xi'an's Layout
Xi'an is organized around a rectangular walled city center, with neighborhoods radiating outward. The walled city (城内) is the historical and cultural heart. South of the walls is the older southern suburbs with universities, museums, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Further south and west is the modern High-Tech Zone. East leads to the Terracotta Warriors, west to older residential areas, and north to the new administrative district and the high-speed train station.
For visitors, 90% of what you want is either inside the walls or just south of the South Gate. The city is manageable — you won't need to master every neighborhood, just the ones relevant to your trip.
Inside the City Walls (城内)
This is Xi'an's historical core — a rectangular area about 2.5km by 3km surrounded by the Ming Dynasty city wall. Everything here is walkable. The Bell Tower marks the exact center. The Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter are to the west. The South Gate (永宁门) anchors the southern edge.
This is where you'll spend most of your time as a visitor. The streets follow a grid pattern, making navigation easy. The area has the city's best concentration of restaurants, from street stalls to fine dining, and the most character — narrow lanes, old trees, courtyard architecture mixed with modern buildings.
The area around the Bell Tower is the busiest and most commercial. The South Gate area is slightly more upscale with better hotels and restaurants. The Muslim Quarter in the northwest is the liveliest area for food and street life.
South of the Walls (城南)
The area just south of the South Gate (南门外) is a natural extension of the city center — modern shopping malls, good restaurants, and easy metro access. This blends into the Xiaozhai (小寨) commercial district.
Further south, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area (大雁塔) is a major cultural zone. The pagoda itself, the Da Ci'en Temple, Tang Paradise theme park, and the Great Tang All Day Mall form a walkable cultural corridor. This area is especially good in the evening — it's where Xi'an's famous night illumination happens.
Xiaozhai is also where the Shaanxi History Museum is located. It's a busy, modern commercial area with a massive underground shopping complex and excellent metro connections.
Other Areas Worth Knowing
High-Tech Zone (高新区) in the southwest: Xi'an's modern business district. Wide roads, skyscrapers, international hotels (Ritz-Carlton, W Hotel). Nice but far from the sights — 30+ minutes by taxi to the walled city. Good for business travelers, less ideal for tourists.
Qujiang New District (曲江新区) in the southeast: a planned cultural and residential area around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise. Upscale, landscaped, pleasant for walking. Good hotels, restaurants, and green space.
East of the city (城东): primarily residential. The route to the Terracotta Warriors and Mount Huashan passes through here. Not a destination area for tourists.
North of the walls (城北): the new administrative district and Xi'an North Railway Station (high-speed trains). Mostly modern residential and office development. The station area is useful for catching high-speed trains.
