Where to Stay in Xi'an — Best Areas, Hotels, and Tips for First-Time Visitors

The Short Answer: Stay Near South Gate if This Is Your First Trip

If this is your first trip to Xi'an, stay inside the city walls or immediately beside them, ideally near South Gate (Yongningmen). That area gives you the best balance of atmosphere, transport, and convenience. You can walk to the City Wall, reach the Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter easily, and still get onto Metro Line 2 without wasting half your day in traffic.

A lot of travelers overcomplicate Xi'an accommodation because the city is large on the map. In practice, most visitors spend the majority of their time in three zones: the old city inside the wall, the South Gate edge of the old city, and the museum-pagoda area around Xiaozhai and Dayanta. If you stay far outside those zones, you will feel it.

If a friend were visiting me for the first time, I would usually tell them to pick one of two bases: South Gate if they want classic Xi'an atmosphere, or the Shaanxi History Museum / Big Wild Goose Pagoda side of town if they care more about modern hotels and easier museum evenings.

South Gate vs Bell Tower vs Xiaozhai: Which Area Fits You?

South Gate (Yongningmen) is the best all-rounder. It feels close to the historic core without being as chaotic as the Bell Tower. Hotels range from hostels to upscale boutiques, the wall is right there, and the metro is simple. This is the safest recommendation for most foreign travelers.

Bell Tower / Drum Tower is best if you want to be in the middle of the action and do not mind noise, crowds, and slightly more touristy streets. It is convenient, but I usually think it is better for short stays than for relaxed sleeping.

Xiaozhai / Big Wild Goose Pagoda / Shaanxi History Museum is better if you prefer newer hotels, bigger malls, easier coffee-shop work breaks, and an evening scene that feels more polished than the old city. It is less atmospheric than South Gate, but often more comfortable.

Qujiang can work for travelers who care about nicer hotels and evening walks around the pagoda district, but it is less central for the old city. The High-Tech Zone is the least useful area for sightseeing unless you are mixing business with leisure.

Best Area for Different Travel Styles

For first-time visitors: South Gate wins. You get the right mix of old-city energy, walkability, and transport.

For history-heavy trips: stay near the Shaanxi History Museum / Big Wild Goose Pagoda area or choose South Gate with easy metro access. Both work, but the museum side makes late-afternoon cultural plans easier.

For food-focused visitors: South Gate or Bell Tower. You can reach the Muslim Quarter, Shuyuanmen, and central food streets quickly, then retreat to a better hotel zone.

For quiet sleep: the streets just inside or just south of South Gate are better than Bell Tower. Look one or two blocks off the main avenues rather than directly on the busiest road.

For travelers who do not speak Chinese: bigger chain hotels around South Gate, Xiaozhai, and Dayanta are usually easier. They are more used to foreign guests, better at passport registration, and more likely to help with museum booking or taxi issues.

By Budget Level and Hotel Type

Budget (under 200 RMB/night): South Gate still gives you the best odds of finding decent hostels and simple local hotels in a practical location. For this budget, location matters more than room aesthetics. A plain room inside the wall beats a nicer room 40 minutes away.

Mid-range (300-600 RMB/night): this is Xi'an's sweet spot. You can get a clean, comfortable room in a chain hotel or practical boutique property near South Gate, Bell Tower, Xiaozhai, or Dayanta. This is the range I recommend to most foreign visitors.

Upper mid-range (600-1000 RMB/night): this is where Xi'an starts becoming very good value. You can often choose between newer business hotels near the pagoda district and more character-driven stays near the old city. Decide whether you want atmosphere or modern comfort.

Luxury (1000+ RMB/night): luxury hotels in Xi'an are usually strongest in Qujiang and the newer southern districts, though you also have character options closer to the old center. Just remember that the nicest hotel is not always the smartest base for sightseeing.

How to Book Foreigner-Friendly Hotels Without Stress

This matters more in China than in many other countries: not every hotel is equally smooth for foreign guests. Large international brands and established Chinese chains are the safest bet because the passport registration process is routine for them.

Use Trip.com rather than relying only on global booking sites. In China, Trip.com is usually better at reflecting actual availability and whether a property regularly handles foreign passports. If a listing looks unusually cheap, double-check the location on a map and read the most recent reviews instead of assuming you found a miracle deal.

When in doubt, prioritize three things over everything else: near a metro station, recent reviews that mention cleanliness, and a front desk that operates 24 hours. These three factors prevent the most common Xi'an hotel headaches.

Areas I Would Avoid for Most Tourists

The area immediately around Xi'an Railway Station is noisy, chaotic, and not pleasant for most stays. It may look convenient on the map, but it does not give you the Xi'an experience most travelers actually want.

The High-Tech Zone has excellent hotels, but it is a poor sightseeing base unless your trip includes meetings or you simply care more about modern luxury than old-city atmosphere. You will spend too much time moving back and forth.

The area around the Terracotta Warriors is not a real city base. It is useful only if you have an unusual itinerary or an extremely early specialized visit planned. For normal trips, staying there wastes your evenings.

Ultra-cheap edge-of-city hotels are false economy in Xi'an. You save a little on the room, then lose it in taxis, dead time, and a worse overall experience.
