Where to Stay in Xi'an — Neighborhood Guide for Every Budget
Honest neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to Xi'an accommodation: where to stay inside the walls, which areas to avoid, and picks for every budget.
Inside the Walls: The Best Choice for Most Visitors
Staying inside the city walls (the rectangular area on any map of Xi'an) puts you in the middle of everything. You can walk to the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter, and South Gate. The area has the most character — old streets, small restaurants, evening life.
The South Gate (永宁门 / Yongningmen) area is the single best location. It has the highest concentration of hotels at every budget level, it's beautiful at night, and the metro connection makes getting anywhere easy. You're walking distance from the wall itself, 15 minutes on foot from the Muslim Quarter, and 10 minutes by metro from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
Specific streets to look at: South Street (南大街), West Street (西大街), and the small lanes around Shuyuanmen (书院门).
By Budget Level
Budget (under 200 RMB/night): The area around the South Gate has several good hostels. Xi'an Ancient City Youth Hostel is a reliable choice. For budget hotels, look along the streets just inside the South Gate — lots of small Chinese chain hotels in the 150-200 RMB range.
Mid-range (300-600 RMB/night): You have excellent options here. Hanting, Atour, and James Joyce Coffetel are reliable Chinese chains with clean rooms and decent locations. International chains like Holiday Inn Express (Bell Tower area) run 400-500 RMB.
Upper mid-range (600-1000 RMB): The Westin Xian is near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda with a great location. The Hilton and Sofitel are solid picks on the east side of the walls. The Eastern House inside the South Gate is a stylish boutique option.
Luxury (1000+ RMB): The Ritz-Carlton and W Hotel are both in the High-Tech Zone — nice hotels but far from the sights. The Sofitel Legend People's Hotel is inside the walls with real character.
Areas I'd Avoid
The area immediately around Xi'an Railway Station is noisy, chaotic, and not pleasant for a stay. The High-Tech Zone (高新区) has great hotels but you'll spend 30-40 minutes each way getting to the main sights. The area around the Terracotta Warriors has a few hotels but there's literally nothing to do there after 5 PM.
