Getting Around Xi'an — Metro, Taxi, Bus, and Walking Guide
Practical transport guide for Xi'an: how to use the metro, when to take a taxi, what apps you need, and how to reach every major sight.
The Metro Is Your Best Friend
Xi'an's metro is modern, clean, and covers everything you'll need as a tourist. It currently has 10+ lines, with the most useful for visitors being:
• Line 1: East-West across the city • Line 2: North-South through the center, stops at Bell Tower, South Gate area • Line 3: Connects to Big Wild Goose Pagoda • Line 4: Useful for the administrative/station area • Line 9: Goes to Huaqing Pool and Terracotta Warriors
Fares are 2-8 RMB depending on distance. Signs and announcements are in both Chinese and English. Trains run roughly 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Buy single-journey tickets at machines (English interface available) or use Alipay's transport QR code if you have it set up.
Taxis and Didi
Taxis in Xi'an are green or blue-green. Flag fall is 8.5 RMB for the first 3km, then about 1.5-2 RMB per km. Most trips within the city cost 10-30 RMB. Have your destination written in Chinese characters to show the driver — very few taxi drivers speak English.
Didi (the Chinese Uber equivalent) works through Alipay or the standalone Didi app. It's often cheaper than taxis and you don't need to explain where you're going. If you have Alipay set up with a foreign card, Didi is the most convenient option.
Watch out: during rush hour (7:30-9:00 AM and 5:30-7:00 PM), traffic inside the walls can be terrible. The metro is often faster than a taxi during these times.
Walking and Cycling
The area inside the city walls is very walkable — it's about 2.5km from the Bell Tower to the South Gate, and the grid layout makes navigation straightforward. Walking between the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter, and South Gate is easy and pleasant, especially in the evening.
Shared bikes (Didi bikes, Meituan bikes) are everywhere. You'll need a Chinese payment app to unlock them. If you have Alipay set up, scan the QR code on the bike and you're good to go. Cycling on the city wall itself (with a rented bike from up there) is a separate experience.
