How to Get to the Terracotta Warriors from Xi'an — Metro, Taxi, Bus, and What Actually Works

The Short Answer: Metro + Short Taxi Is the Best Balance for Most People

If you want the smartest default route from Xi'an to the Terracotta Warriors, take Metro Line 9 toward Huaqing Pool and then use a short taxi or the local bus for the final stretch. That is usually the best mix of cost, predictability, and avoiding the old tourist scams around station buses.

A direct DiDi or taxi is easier, especially for two or three people, but you are paying for convenience. The public bus route can work, but it is rarely the option I would recommend to a first-time foreign visitor unless you are comfortable with a little friction.

Option 1: Metro Line 9 + Taxi

This is the route I recommend most often. From central Xi'an, get yourself onto the metro network and take Line 9 to Huaqing Pool station. From there, take a taxi or DiDi for the last 10-15 minutes to the museum entrance.

This route avoids most road traffic, keeps costs reasonable, and still saves you the hassle of figuring out the final local bus segment. If you are traveling solo and do not want to overpay for a full taxi from downtown, this is usually the sweet spot.

Option 2: Direct DiDi or Taxi

A direct DiDi or taxi from central Xi'an to the Terracotta Warriors usually takes around 50-60 minutes depending on traffic and costs roughly 120-150 RMB. This is the easiest option if you are two or three people, traveling with parents, or just do not want to think about transfers before 8:30 in the morning.

If you do this, leave early. A convenient route is still a bad route if you start too late and arrive with the tour bus crowds.

Option 3: Bus 306 / Tourist Bus

Yes, the tourist bus exists, and yes, some people use it. But this is also where a lot of confusion and low-level scamming happens. If you use the bus, make sure you are getting on the real official route rather than following random people in the station area promising a faster version.

I do not think the bus is the best option for most first-time foreign visitors. It can save money, but it also adds uncertainty exactly where you do not need uncertainty.

What I Would Avoid

Avoid anyone near the railway station, Bell Tower, or obvious tourist zones offering a "cheap Terracotta Warriors tour" on the spot. That is how people end up at jade shops, silk stops, and other nonsense before they even reach the site.

Also avoid building your route around vague assumptions like "I'll just figure it out there." The Warriors are not in central Xi'an. Once you commit to the eastern trip, transport planning matters.

Solo traveler on a budget: metro + taxi.

Couple or small group: direct DiDi is often worth it.

Traveling with parents or kids: direct DiDi unless everyone is happy with transfers.

Very confident independent traveler who enjoys bus systems: bus 306 can work, but it is not the easiest first-choice route.
