Xi'an Insider

Why I Created This Guide

Hi, I'm Shane Yang. I've called Xi'an home for over ten years, and I created this website because I was tired of seeing the same generic, outdated advice repeated across travel blogs and guidebooks.

The Problem with Most Xi'an Guides

Most English-language content about Xi'an falls into one of two categories:

  • Corporate travel sites that copy-paste the same five attractions without ever visiting them
  • Travel bloggerswho spent 48 hours in the city and wrote a "complete guide" based on their hotel lobby's brochure

The result? Travelers show up with expectations that don't match reality, visit the same overcrowded spots at the worst times, and miss the experiences that actually make Xi&aposan special.

My Approach

I write from the perspective of someone who lives here — who takes the metro to work, who knows which noodle shop is open at 2 AM, who has visited the Terracotta Warriors in every season and knows exactly when to go to avoid crowds.

That means:

  • I tell you when a popular attraction is overrated
  • I recommend places that don't appear on any other English website
  • I give you the practical details that actually matter (like which metro exit to use)
  • I update content when things change — because Xi'an is constantly evolving

My Background

I moved to Xi'an in 2013 for work and never left. I've lived in three different neighborhoods, worked in two others, and explored every district of the city on foot, by bike, and by metro.

Over the years, I've hosted dozens of friends and family members visiting from abroad. Each visit taught me what travelers actually need to know — and what the guidebooks get wrong.

Why This Site is Free

This website is a passion project. I don't work for a travel agency, and I don't take money from hotels or restaurants to recommend them. If I suggest a place, it's because I genuinely think it's worth your time.

I do use affiliate links for some hotel bookings (clearly marked), which helps cover hosting costs. But my recommendations are never influenced by commissions — I'd rather make less money than send you to a bad hotel.

Get in Touch

I love hearing from readers. If you have questions about Xi'an, feedback on the site, or just want to say hello, feel free to reach out via WhatsApp or email.

I read every message and try to respond within a day or two. While I can't plan your entire itinerary for you, I'm happy to answer specific questions or clarify anything on the site.

A Note on Accuracy

I do my best to keep this site updated, but Xi'an changes fast. Prices, opening hours, and even entire neighborhoods can change between my visits. If you find something outdated, please let me know — I'll update it as soon as possible.
