It gives you nearly all the convenience of Bell Tower, but with a calmer atmosphere, a better relationship to the City Wall, and a more pleasant version of central Xi'an.

Bell Tower is not a bad area. It is simply the more hectic version of central Xi'an. For many travelers, especially first-timers, South Gate is the better base even if Bell Tower looks more central on the map.

Why South Gate Usually Wins

South Gate feels like a place you can actually stay, not just pass through. You can walk the wall at sunset, use the metro easily, and return at night to a part of the city that still feels atmospheric but less chaotic than Bell Tower.

It is also the easiest area to recommend to foreign visitors because it balances old-city character with practical hotel quality. If you want one location that rarely goes wrong, this is it.

Why Bell Tower Still Works for Some Trips

Bell Tower is more obviously central. You are close to the Drum Tower, near the Muslim Quarter side of the old city, and surrounded by transport connections and constant activity. If you are staying only one night and want to be dropped in the middle of everything, Bell Tower can make sense.

The tradeoff is noise, traffic, and a more touristed street-level experience. I would choose Bell Tower only if maximum centrality matters more to you than comfort, sleep, and atmosphere.

Food, Walking, and Night Feel

Bell Tower is better if you want to be closer to the Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter side of the old city. South Gate is better if you want evening wall walks, Shuyuanmen, and a more graceful transition between sightseeing and resting.

In practical terms, both areas let you reach the same major attractions. The difference is mood. Bell Tower feels busier and more commercial. South Gate feels more livable.

When the Museum District Is the Smarter Third Option

Some travelers should choose neither South Gate nor Bell Tower. If you prefer newer hotels, smoother modern infrastructure, and want the Shaanxi History Museum and Big Wild Goose Pagoda area nearby, the Xiaozhai / Dayanta corridor can be the smarter base.

This is especially true for travelers who value modern comfort more than old-city atmosphere. It is less classic, but often easier.
