The best place to stay in Xi'an for first-time visitors is South Gate (Yongningmen). It gives you the clearest version of Xi'an: the City Wall is right there, the old city is easy to walk, the metro is practical, and evenings feel atmospheric without being as hectic as Bell Tower.

This is the area I would recommend to a friend who wants the least risky choice. You do not need the absolute fanciest hotel. You need a base that makes the rest of the city feel easy, and South Gate does that better than anywhere else.
