Xi'an for Students — See the Ancient Capital Without Breaking the Bank
Studying abroad or on a gap year? Xi'an is surprisingly affordable. A student-focused guide to cheap eats, free attractions, hostel life, and seeing everything for under 200 RMB a day.
Xi'an on a Student Budget
Xi'an is one of China's best cities for student travel. You can eat incredibly well for under 60 RMB a day, sleep in a clean hostel for 60-100 RMB, use the metro for 10-15 RMB, and find free or nearly-free cultural experiences everywhere. If Beijing and Shanghai feel financially intimidating, Xi'an is a relief.
A tight student budget: 180-220 RMB/day including hostel dorm, street food meals, metro transport, and one paid attraction. Push harder and you can do 150 RMB/day with more free activities and no paid attractions on some days.
Free and Nearly-Free Xi'an
Free attractions worth your time:
Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum (free) — genuine historical exhibits in a peaceful setting. A legitimate alternative when Shaanxi History Museum is sold out or you want quiet.
Xi'an City Wall moat park (free) — walk under the wall for free and get great views without the 54 RMB ticket.
Great Tang All Day Mall (free) — the evening illumination, Tang-style architecture, and street performances cost nothing.
Bell Tower exterior (free to photograph) — the inside is fine but the best views are from outside. Same for the Drum Tower.
Morning parks (free) — Revolution Park and Lianhu Park at 7 AM give you tai chi, calligraphy practice, and songbirds.
Xiaonanmen morning market (free to walk) — breakfast for 5-10 RMB while soaking in neighborhood atmosphere.
Revolution Park and Lianhu Park morning life — free cultural experiences.
The only sight you truly shouldn't skip for budget reasons: the Terracotta Warriors (120 RMB). It's the reason you're here.
Student Money-Saving Strategies
Stay in hostels inside the walls — 60-100 RMB for a dorm bed, walking distance to everything. Xi'an Ancient City Youth Hostel near the South Gate is a reliable choice.
Eat street food for almost every meal. 15-30 RMB per dish, and the Muslim Quarter side streets have the best food at the lowest prices. Dapiyuan over Beiyuanmen every time.
Walk everywhere inside the walls. It's compact and pleasant. Use the metro for longer trips (to the Warriors, to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area).
Student ID: if you have an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or a Chinese student ID, some attractions offer discounts. The Terracotta Warriors offers half-price for students with valid ID — this alone saves 60 RMB.
Buy water, snacks, and supplies from convenience stores, not tourist sites. A 2 RMB bottle of water at a convenience store costs 10 RMB outside the Warriors.
