Xi'an for Budget Backpackers — See Everything for Under 250 RMB/Day
How to experience Xi'an on a backpacker budget: cheap eats, affordable hostels, free attractions, and money-saving strategies that don't compromise the experience.
Xi'an on a Shoestring
Xi'an is one of China's best cities for budget travel. You can eat incredibly well for under 50 RMB a day, sleep in a clean hostel for 60-100 RMB, and use the metro for 10-15 RMB. Main attractions are the biggest cost (50-120 RMB each), but strategic choices keep this manageable.
A realistic backpacker budget: 200-250 RMB/day including accommodation, food, transport, and one attraction. You can push it lower with dorm beds, street food only, and free activities.
Money-Saving Strategies
1. The Xi'an Museum (Small Wild Goose Pagoda) is free and excellent — a genuine alternative when Shaanxi History Museum is sold out or you want to save. 2. You don't need to go up the Bell Tower or Drum Tower — both are best photographed from outside. 3. The City Wall costs 54 RMB but you can walk the moat park below for free and still get great views of the wall. 4. The Muslim Quarter side streets have the best food at the lowest prices — Dapiyuan and Sajinqiao. 5. Walk everywhere inside the walls — it's compact, pleasant, and free. 6. Buy snacks and drinks from convenience stores, not tourist sites. 7. Stay in hostels inside the walls — 60-100 RMB for a dorm bed in a prime location.
The one thing not to cheap out on: the Terracotta Warriors. Pay the full 120 RMB ticket and do it properly.
Free and Nearly-Free Experiences Worth Your Time
Xi'an has more free attractions than most travelers realize. Here's what's actually worth your time, with honest ratings.
**Xi'an Museum / Small Wild Goose Pagoda — ★★★★★ (Free)** The best free attraction in the city. Genuine Tang Dynasty artifacts in a modern museum, plus the pagoda grounds with gardens and ancient trees. Less crowded than Shaanxi History Museum and the collection quality is high. The pagoda itself is 1,300 years old and you can walk around the base. Budget 2 hours.
**City Wall Moat Park — ★★★★☆ (Free)** The环形 park circling the outside of the wall. Walking the full loop takes about 3 hours, but the section from South Gate to Hanguang Gate is the prettiest — well-maintained gardens, locals practicing music, and clear views of the wall above. Go at sunset.
**Great Tang All Day Mall — ★★★★☆ (Free)** The evening illumination show is free and impressive. Red lanterns, Tang-style architecture, street performers, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda lit up at the north end. It's commercial and crowded, but the atmosphere is genuinely enjoyable and it costs nothing to walk through.
**Muslim Quarter Walking Route — ★★★★☆ (Free to walk)** Start at Sajinqiao (洒金桥) in the morning when it's a local market, walk south through Dapiyuan (大皮院), then into the touristy Beiyuanmen (北院门) section. The full route is about 2km. You'll pass food stalls, spice shops, mosques, and daily neighborhood life. Spending money is optional — the walk itself is the experience.
**Morning Parks — ★★★☆☆ (Free)** Revolution Park (革命公园) and Lianhu Park (莲花池公园) between 7-9 AM are full of tai chi groups, calligraphy practice with water brushes, songbird walkers with caged birds, and elderly musicians. It's the most authentic slice of local life you'll find. Zero tourists.
**Shuyuanmen Cultural Street — ★★★☆☆ (Free to walk)** The pedestrian street east of the South Gate lined with calligraphy shops, ink stone vendors, and art supply stores. You don't need to buy anything — watching the artists work and browsing the brushes and scrolls is the attraction.
**Free WiFi:** Xi'an offers free public WiFi ("i-Xi'an") in the city center, but it requires a Chinese phone number to register (SMS verification). Without a local SIM, you're better off relying on your hostel/hotel WiFi or buying a local data SIM (China Mobile tourist SIM, about 100 RMB for 7 days). Most cafes inside the walls have free WiFi with purchase.
**Student discounts:** If you have an ISIC card or a Chinese student ID, use it. The Terracotta Warriors is 60 RMB with student ID (half price). The City Wall and Shaanxi History Museum also offer student discounts. Always ask — the worst they can say is no.
**Best 10 RMB meals:** A roujiamo (肉夹馍) from any Muslim Quarter stall (8-12 RMB). A bowl of liangpi (凉皮) from a street vendor (8-10 RMB). Four grilled lamb skewers (羊肉串) at 2-3 RMB each. A steamed bun stuffed with vegetables (菜夹馍, 5-8 RMB). A bowl of hulatang (胡辣汤, spicy pepper soup) for breakfast (8-10 RMB). You can eat three filling meals for under 35 RMB total.
**Hostel negotiation:** For stays of 4+ nights, politely ask at the front desk about a multi-night discount. The posted dorm price (60-100 RMB) is often negotiable to 50-80 RMB for longer stays, especially in shoulder season. The key phrase: "Wǒ zhù sì wǎn, kěyǐ piányi yīdiǎn ma?" (我住四晚,可以便宜一点吗?— I'm staying four nights, can you make it a bit cheaper?). Worst case, they say no and you've saved nothing. Best case, you save 100+ RMB over a week.
