Xi'an in Spring (March–May) — The Best Season to Visit
Spring in Xi'an brings mild temperatures, cherry blossoms, and the best overall conditions for exploring the city. Here's what to expect and how to plan.
Why Spring Is the Best Time
Spring (March through May) is, in my opinion, the best season to visit Xi'an. The weather is mild — temperatures climb from about 8-15°C in March to 15-28°C in May. The city's trees and flowers come back to life, and the air quality tends to be better than in winter. It's warm enough to enjoy the outdoor sights without the punishing heat of summer.
April is the sweet spot. The weather is nearly perfect for walking the City Wall, the cherry blossoms are out around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and in the city's parks, and the tourist crowds haven't yet reached peak levels.
What to Pack
Layers are essential in spring. Mornings and evenings can be cool (8-12°C), while afternoons warm up significantly (20-25°C by April). A light jacket, a sweater, and comfortable walking shoes. An umbrella for April showers. Sunscreen by May when the sun gets strong.
Spring-Specific Tips
The City Wall is at its spring best — the trees along the moat are green, the temperature is perfect for cycling. The Muslim Quarter is pleasant to walk through without the summer sweat. Cherry blossom viewing at Qinglong Temple (青龙寺) in early April is a local favorite that most tourists don't know about.
Be aware: Labour Day (May 1-5) is one of China's busiest travel periods. Avoid Xi'an entirely during this window if you can — attractions are mobbed and hotels spike in price.
