Seasons
Xi'an in Autumn (September–November) — The Golden Season
Autumn rivals spring as Xi'an's best season: crisp air, golden leaves, and comfortable temperatures for exploring. The ideal time for walking and photography.
Autumn: The Other Perfect Season
Alongside spring, autumn (September through November) is the best time to be in Xi'an. Temperatures are comfortable — 15-25°C in September-October, cooling to 5-15°C by November. The humidity drops, the skies are often clearer, and the golden autumn light on Xi'an's ancient architecture is beautiful.
October is the prime month. The weather is nearly flawless, the autumn foliage colors the City Wall and temple grounds, and the evening temperatures are perfect for walking the Muslim Quarter or the Great Tang All Day Mall.
Golden Week Warning
The first week of October is China's National Day "Golden Week" holiday — one of the busiest travel periods on the planet. Do NOT visit Xi'an during this week (roughly October 1-7). Every attraction will be packed beyond capacity, hotel prices triple, and the experience is miserable.
But the weeks before and after Golden Week? Fantastic. Mid-September and late October are ideal.
