Xi'an Weather Guide — What to Expect Each Month
A practical month-by-month Xi'an weather guide: temperatures, rainfall, what to wear, and how weather affects your sightseeing plans.
Xi'an Weather at a Glance
Xi'an has a temperate, monsoon-influenced climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold and dry, and spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. The city sits in the Wei River valley, surrounded by mountains to the south, which gives it relatively stable weather compared to coastal Chinese cities.
Average annual temperature: 13-14°C (55-57°F). Annual rainfall: 550-600mm, mostly concentrated in July-September. The city gets about 2,000 hours of sunshine per year — decent but not spectacular.
The biggest weather factor for sightseeing isn't rain or temperature — it's air quality. Winter can bring heavy smog (Xi'an sits in a basin that traps pollution). Check the AQI before planning outdoor-heavy days in winter.
Spring (March–May)
March: 5-15°C (41-59°F). Still chilly, especially in the mornings. Light jacket needed. Variable weather — some days feel like spring, others like winter hanging on.
April: 10-22°C (50-72°F). Genuinely pleasant. Light layers work well. Can be rainy — bring an umbrella. The city greens up and parks are lovely.
May: 15-28°C (59-82°F). Near-perfect temperatures, especially early May. By late May it starts feeling like early summer. Light clothing, sunscreen, and hat recommended.
Summer (June–August)
June: 20-33°C (68-91°F). Hot but not yet oppressive. Afternoons can be sweaty. Good time before the July-August peak crowds.
July: 23-35°C (73-95°F). The hottest month. High humidity makes it feel hotter. Afternoon thunderstorms are common — they're intense but usually short. Umbrella for both sun and rain.
August: 22-34°C (72-93°F). Similar to July but slightly more bearable toward the end. Still hot and humid. This is peak domestic tourism season.
Autumn (September–November)
September: 16-27°C (61-81°F). Early September still feels like summer. By mid-month the humidity breaks and conditions are lovely. Light layers for evenings.
October: 10-20°C (50-68°F). Perfect sightseeing weather. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, crisp evenings. A light jacket for morning and evening. The golden autumn light is beautiful.
November: 3-12°C (37-54°F). Getting cold. Heating comes on in hotels. Warm coat needed. Trees lose their leaves. The first real winter month.
Winter (December–February)
December: -2 to 7°C (28-45°F). Cold and dry. Warm coat, gloves, and hat needed. Light snow possible. Air quality can be poor — check AQI.
January: -3 to 5°C (27-41°F). The coldest month. Thermal layers make a big difference. The dry cold is penetrating, especially on the City Wall where wind chill kicks in.
February: 0-9°C (32-48°F). Still cold but warming slightly by late February. Chinese New Year crowds if it falls in February. Snow is rare but possible.
