Xi'an Packing List — What to Bring for Every Season
A practical packing list for Xi'an: what to bring in each season, what you can buy here, and the things foreign travelers often forget.
The Essentials (Any Season)
These are the things every Xi'an visitor should bring, regardless of when you're traveling:
- Comfortable walking shoes — Xi'an involves a LOT of walking. The City Wall is 14km, the Muslim Quarter is best explored on foot, and the Terracotta Warriors site is huge. Your feet will thank you. - Passport — you need it for hotel check-in, attraction tickets, and train bookings. Carry it with you. - Phone with a translation app — Google Translate works with downloaded Chinese pack. Pleco is better for individual characters. - VPN installed and tested before you arrive — many foreign apps and websites are blocked in China. Set this up before you leave home. - Portable battery pack — you'll use your phone for maps, translation, photos, and payments. Battery dies fast. - Small pack of tissues/wet wipes — many public restrooms don't provide toilet paper. Carry your own. - Photocopy of your passport — keep it separate from your actual passport, just in case.
Seasonal Additions
Spring (March–May): Light jacket, sweater, umbrella for April showers, sunscreen by May.
Summer (June–August): Lightweight clothing, hat, sunscreen (SPF 50+), water bottle, umbrella (for sun AND sudden thunderstorms), insect repellent.
Autumn (September–November): Layers, light jacket, comfortable walking shoes. The easiest season to pack for.
Winter (December–February): Warm coat, thermal layers (long underwear makes a huge difference), gloves, hat, scarf, warm socks. The cold is dry but penetrating, especially on the City Wall.
What NOT to Bring (Buy Here)
Don't overpack toiletries — Chinese convenience stores and supermarkets have everything you need. Don't bring a heavy guidebook — you have this website on your phone. Don't bring more than one pair of "nice" shoes — Xi'an is casual, and you'll be walking too much for fashion footwear.
