First Time in Xi'an on a Weekend — How to Make 2 Days Count
Your first visit to Xi'an falls on a weekend? A strategy guide for making the most of a first-time weekend trip: what to prioritize, how to avoid the worst crowds, and a realistic 2-day plan.
First Time + Weekend = Strategic Planning
Your first trip to Xi'an and you only have a weekend. It's a common scenario — you're coming from Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu on a Friday evening train, and you have Saturday and Sunday to experience one of China's most historically rich cities.
The good news: Xi'an's essential sights are concentrated enough that a strategic 2-day plan works. The challenge: as a first-timer on a weekend, you're facing both unfamiliarity and weekend crowds at the same time. Here's how to handle it.
Saturday: Warriors + City Wall + Muslim Quarter
Morning (7:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Go directly to the Terracotta Warriors. Saturday morning is busy, but 8:30 AM opening is the quietest window you'll get. Metro Line 9, arrive by 8:15 AM. Do Pit 1 first, then Pits 2 and 3, then the Bronze Chariots.
Afternoon (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Lunch near the city center (roujiamo for speed). Then the City Wall from South Gate. Rent a bike — cycling the wall is the first-timer rite of passage. Do a section, not the full loop, to save time.
Evening (6:00 PM onward): Bell Tower at sunset for photos. Then Muslim Quarter food crawl. As a first-timer, walk Beiyuanmen for the atmosphere (10 minutes), then turn left onto Dapiyuan for actual food. Order roujiamo, liangpi, lamb skewers, and suanmeitang (plum drink). End with a night walk past the illuminated Bell Tower.
Sunday: Museum + Pagoda + Departure
Morning (8:30 AM – 11:00 AM): Shaanxi History Museum. You MUST have booked tickets in advance — weekend slots sell out. Focus on Halls 1 and 2. If tickets are unavailable, go to the Xi'an Museum at Small Wild Goose Pagoda (free, no reservation needed, excellent exhibits).
Late Morning (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Small Wild Goose Pagoda and temple garden if you haven't been. Quiet and pleasant.
Afternoon (1:00 PM – departure): Lunch near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, then explore Da Ci'en Temple grounds. If you have a late departure, walk through the Great Tang All Day Mall — it's worth seeing by daylight and the atmosphere builds toward evening.
Departure: Metro Line 14 to the airport (~40 min) or Line 4 to Xi'an North Station.
