2 Day Xi'an Itinerary — The Best of Xi'an in a Weekend
A tightly-planned 2-day Xi'an itinerary covering the absolute essentials: Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, Muslim Quarter food, and the best of the ancient capital for a short trip.
Making 48 Hours Count
Two days in Xi'an means you can hit the absolute essentials without feeling crushed. It's one day more than the people who try to "do Xi'an in a day" and significantly better than that sounds. You'll cover the Terracotta Warriors, the City Wall, the Muslim Quarter, the Bell Tower, and one more major sight — and you'll have time to eat well in between.
This plan works best if you arrive the evening before. A Friday evening arrival gives you two full weekend days. If you're arriving the morning of Day 1, it still works — you'll just be starting from the train station or airport rather than from your hotel.
Day 1: Warriors, Wall, and Night Food
Morning (7:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Terracotta Warriors. This is non-negotiable. Metro Line 9, arrive by 8:15 AM, be in Pit 1 by 8:30. Spend 2-2.5 hours covering Pits 1, 2, 3 and the Bronze Chariots. Head back to the city.
Early Afternoon (1:00 PM): Lunch near the city center. Get a quick roujiamo — it's fast, filling, and you can eat while walking.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM): City Wall from the South Gate. Rent a bike and do a section of the wall. The full loop takes 90 minutes; if you're tight on time, cycle from South Gate to West Gate and back (~40 minutes). The mid-afternoon light is good for photos.
Evening (6:00 PM onward): Bell Tower area at sunset for photos. Then Muslim Quarter for a proper food crawl dinner. Start on Beiyuanmen for atmosphere, then turn left into Dapiyuan (大皮院) for the real food. Roujiamo (if you didn't have one at lunch), yangrou paomo, grilled lamb skewers, cold noodles. End with a walk around the Bell Tower at night — it's dramatically lit and a perfect end to the day.
Day 2: Museum, Pagoda, and Departure
Morning (8:30 AM – 11:30 AM): Shaanxi History Museum. You MUST have pre-booked tickets. Focus on Halls 1 and 2 for the prehistoric to Han Dynasty arc. This is where Xi'an's 3,000 years of history makes visual sense.
Late Morning (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM): Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum. It's free, it's peaceful, and it's a lovely contrast to the busy History Museum. The pagoda garden is a quiet spot in the middle of the city.
Lunch (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM): Near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area. Try a sit-down Shaanxi restaurant for biangbiang noodles.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – departure): Big Wild Goose Pagoda and temple grounds. Don't bother climbing the pagoda. Walk through Da Ci'en Temple, then south into the Great Tang All Day Mall area — even during the day it's impressive. Depending on your departure time, you can linger or head to the station/airport.
If you have a late departure and extra time, an evening walk through the Great Tang All Day Mall with the lights on is a great farewell to Xi'an.
