Xi'an for Couples — Romantic Spots and Itineraries
Xi'an at night is one of China's most romantic cityscapes. From the lantern-lit City Wall to the Great Tang All Day Mall, here's where to go as a couple.
Why Xi'an Is a Surprisingly Romantic City
Xi'an at night has a kind of magic that doesn't come through in daytime photos. The City Wall lit up along its 14km circuit. The Bell Tower glowing gold at the center of the city. The Great Tang All Day Mall with its red lanterns and Tang Dynasty atmosphere. Cycling a tandem bike on the ancient wall at sunset. Eating your way through the Muslim Quarter, sharing dishes as you go.
It's not Paris or Venice, but Xi'an has its own kind of romance — one rooted in history, in the feeling of being surrounded by 3,000 years of civilization while the modern city buzzes around you.
Best Couple Activities
1. Tandem bike on the City Wall at sunset — cheesy in the best way, and the views are stunning. 2. Evening walk through the Great Tang All Day Mall — the lights, the performers, the Tang architecture. Grab drinks or snacks and just wander. 3. Night photography session around the Bell Tower — set up a tripod or just use your phones, the lighting is fantastic. 4. Muslim Quarter food crawl for two — share roujiamo, liangpi, and skewers across multiple stops. 5. Day trip to Huaqing Pool — the love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei is basically Tang Dynasty Romeo and Juliet.
Where to Stay and Splurge as a Couple
For couples, where you stay shapes the trip. Inside the city walls, the area near the South Gate (Yongningmen) has the best concentration of romantic hotels. The Sofitel Legend People's Grand Hotel on Renmin Square occupies a 1950s Sino-Soviet building with gardens and a courtyard — old-world atmosphere without kitsch. For something more contemporary, the Wyndham Grand near the South Gate has upper-floor rooms with direct City Wall views. Mid-range picks: the Eastern House Boutique Hotel (inside the walls, courtyard style, 400-600 RMB) and the Hantang Inn (traditional architecture, quieter location).
Splurge on at least one evening. The Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is touristy, yes — but sharing a table with your partner while watching a performance of music and dance from 1,300 years ago is genuinely memorable. Book the dinner package (300-500 RMB per person) rather than the show-only ticket. It's the kind of evening that feels special even if you're normally skeptical of organized entertainment.
For dinner, skip the Muslim Quarter for romance — it's loud and crowded. Instead, find a rooftop restaurant near the South Gate. Sifang Heping (四方和平) on Shuncheng Lane has terrace tables with a direct view of the illuminated wall. A dinner here runs 200-400 RMB for two, which is high for Xi'an but cheap by Western standards for this kind of setting.
If you want a spa experience, the hot spring resorts in Lintong District (near the Terracotta Warriors) are where Tang emperors bathed. A day pass at Huaqing Aegean Hot Spring runs 200-300 RMB per person for outdoor pools with mountain views. Combine it with your Warriors visit for a full day out of the city.
Budget-conscious couples: the rooftop at the Hantang Hostel has wall views and cheap drinks. The moat park below the South Gate is free and genuinely romantic after dark. And sharing a bowl of yangrou paomo (25-30 RMB) at a small Muslim Quarter restaurant is more intimate than any expensive restaurant — you tear the bread together before it goes into the soup. That's a Xi'an ritual that costs almost nothing.
