Xi'an Food Lover's Itinerary — 3 Days of Eating
A food-first 3-day Xi'an itinerary: from street food crawls in the Muslim Quarter to regional Shaanxi specialties at Yongxingfang, plus the best restaurants.
Xi'an, Built Around Food
This itinerary inverts the usual formula. Instead of "see the sights and eat along the way," this is "eat your way through Xi'an, and see the sights between meals." It covers the same key destinations as the 3-day itinerary, but every decision is organized around food — where to eat, when to go, and what to order.
Street food budget for this trip: roughly 150-200 RMB per day for a very full food experience.
Day 1: Muslim Quarter Deep Dive
Morning: Start at the Drum Tower. Walk up Beiyuanmen for the atmosphere (don't eat yet). Turn left onto Dapiyuan (大皮院).
Breakfast: Roujiamo (肉夹馍) from Lao Sun Jia — the beef version, crispy bread, 15 RMB. Follow with a bowl of hulatang (胡辣汤 — spicy pepper soup) from any busy shop, 10 RMB.
Late morning snack: Zenggao (甑糕) — sticky rice cake with red dates from a street vendor, 8 RMB.
Lunch: Yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍) at a sit-down restaurant on Dapiyuan. Take your time tearing the bread. 30-40 RMB.
Afternoon: Walk off the food at the Great Mosque (大清真寺, 25 RMB), then the City Wall (cycle or walk).
Evening: Back to the Muslim Quarter for round 2. Liángpí (凉皮) and grilled lamb skewers (羊肉串). Then find a sit-down place for guan tang bao (灌汤包 — soup dumplings). End with Eight Treasures Tea (八宝茶).
Day 2: Warriors + Yongxingfang Evening
Morning: Terracotta Warriors (early start). Pack snacks for the trip — buy some flatbread and fruit the night before.
Afternoon lunch: On the way back from the Warriors, stop near the Bell Tower. Try 德发长 (De Fa Chang) for their famous dumpling banquet — dozens of varieties of dumplings, 80-120 RMB.
Evening: Yongxingfang (永兴坊) for a Shaanxi-wide food crawl. Try Hanzhong rice noodles (汉中米皮), Ansai lamb soup, biangbiang noodles, and Qinzhen rice noodles. This is the place to sample food from all over Shaanxi province in one evening.
Day 3: Breakfast Culture + Final Feast
Early morning: Xiaonanmen morning market (小南门早市). This is where locals buy fresh produce and eat breakfast. Get jianbing (煎饼 — savory crepe), fresh doujiang (豆浆 — soy milk), and youtiao (油条 — fried dough sticks). 15-20 RMB total.
Morning: Shaanxi History Museum (book ahead).
Lunch: Xi'an Restaurant (西安饭庄) near the South Gate for classic Shaanxi dishes in a sit-down setting.
Afternoon: Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum (free).
Farewell dinner: Find a hot pot restaurant (火锅) near the South Gate and go all out. Hot pot is a social, lingering meal — the perfect way to end a food-focused trip.
