7 Day Xi'an Itinerary — The Complete Deep Dive
A comprehensive 7-day Xi'an itinerary covering every major sight plus Huashan, Han Yang Ling, and deep cultural exploration — for travelers who want to really know Xi'an.
Why a Week in Xi'an?
Seven days in Xi'an lets you go beyond the highlights. You'll cover all the essential sights (Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, Muslim Quarter, museums, pagodas) at a relaxed pace, plus add a day trip to Mount Huashan, explore the quieter side of the city (Han Yang Ling, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Yongxingfang), and have time for spontaneous discoveries.
This is the itinerary for people who don't just want to photograph Xi'an — they want to understand it. You'll have time to revisit favorite spots, linger in teahouses, and explore side streets without rushing.
Days 1-3: The Core Experience
Follow the 3-day itinerary but at a more relaxed pace. Spread the core sights across three comfortable days:
Day 1: Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter food crawl, City Wall sunset cycle. Take your time in the Muslim Quarter side streets — try yangrou paomo at a sit-down restaurant, not a tourist stall.
Day 2: Terracotta Warriors. Go early (8:15 AM arrival) but don't rush. After the pits, have a proper lunch. If the weather is good, add Huaqing Pool on the way back.
Day 3: Shaanxi History Museum in the morning, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise in the afternoon and evening. Stay through the Tang Paradise night illumination.
Day 4: Mount Huashan
A full day for Mount Huashan. Take the 7:30 AM high-speed train from Xi'an North Station. Cable car up the North Peak, hike between the peaks (North → East → South → West), do the plank walk if you're brave, cable car down the West Peak. Return to Xi'an by 8 PM.
If the weather is bad (rain, fog, or high wind), swap this day with Day 5 or 6. Huashan in bad weather is not just unpleasant — portions of the trail can be genuinely dangerous.
Days 5-7: Going Deeper
Day 5: Han Yang Ling Museum in the morning (the intimate, glass-floored terracotta site), Yongxingfang for lunch and Shaanxi snacks, Tang Paradise if you haven't done it yet, or a relaxed evening in the Bell Tower area.
Day 6: Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum (free, peaceful, excellent), Shuyuanmen calligraphy street, teahouse culture, then a Tang Dynasty music and dance show in the evening.
Day 7: Your buffer day. Revisit a favorite spot, do souvenir shopping, explore a neighborhood you haven't seen, or take it easy before your departure. The morning market at Xiaonanmen is a great last-morning experience.
