4 Day Xi'an Itinerary — The Ideal Extended Trip
Four days is a sweet spot between the quick trip and the deep dive. This Xi'an itinerary adds Huaqing Pool, deeper food exploration, and a more relaxed pace to the essential sights.
Why 4 Days Works So Well
Four days is a genuinely sweet spot for Xi'an. It's less rushed than 3 days but doesn't require the commitment of a full week. You can do everything in the 3-day core itinerary plus add one significant extra experience — Huaqing Pool, Han Yang Ling, or a deeper food exploration — while keeping a comfortable pace.
This is the itinerary I'd recommend to anyone who says "I want to really see Xi'an but I don't have a full week."
Days 1-2: The Core
Follow the 3-day itinerary structure for your first two days:
Day 1: Bell Tower orientation, Muslim Quarter food crawl (Dapiyuan for real food), City Wall from South Gate — bike a section at sunset.
Day 2: Terracotta Warriors early (8:15 AM arrival), spend 2.5-3 hours. If weather is good, stop at Huaqing Pool on the way back since you're on the same metro line. Evening: rest or a relaxed dinner near your hotel.
Day 3: Museums and Pagodas
Morning: Shaanxi History Museum — book ahead, arrive at opening time. Focus on Halls 1-2, add the Tang Dynasty Treasures exhibition (30 RMB, worth it).
Lunch: Xiaozhai commercial area near the museum, plenty of options.
Afternoon: Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum (free, peaceful). Then Big Wild Goose Pagoda temple grounds.
Evening: Great Tang All Day Mall for the full illuminated Tang Dynasty experience. This is the essential Xi'an night activity.
Day 4: Your Bonus Day — Choose One
Option A — Huaqing Pool + Mount Li: Take Metro Line 9 east (same line as the Warriors). Explore the hot spring palace complex where Tang emperors bathed. Cable car up Mount Li for views. Half-day trip. Good if you want more historical sights.
Option B — Han Yang Ling Museum: 20km north of the city. The tomb of a Han Dynasty emperor with terracotta figurines viewed through glass floors. Much quieter than the main Warriors site. Half-day trip. Best for history enthusiasts who want to go deeper.
Option C — Deep Food Exploration: Spend the day eating. Morning at Xiaonanmen market for breakfast. Then the Muslim Quarter side streets you missed. Afternoon at Yongxingfang for Shaanxi-wide food sampling. Evening hot pot near the South Gate.
