Xi'an with Kids — A Practical Family Travel Guide
Everything you need to know about visiting Xi'an with children: which sights work best, how to adjust your itinerary for small legs, and what to pack.
Xi'an Is Surprisingly Family-Friendly
Xi'an is one of the more family-friendly Chinese cities for foreign visitors. The main sights have a natural appeal to kids — 6,000 life-sized terracotta soldiers is a concept that works across languages and ages. The City Wall is essentially a giant, safe elevated cycling track. The Muslim Quarter's food stalls are visual and exciting.
That said, traveling with kids in Xi'an requires some adjustments. Here's what to know.
Best Sights for Kids
Terracotta Warriors — Kids genuinely love this. The scale is impressive, the figures are fascinating, and there's a natural "wow factor." Younger kids (under 6) might lose interest after Pit 1. Don't force Pit 2 and 3 if they're done — Pit 1 is the main event.
City Wall cycling — The highlight for active kids. Rent a tandem bike with a child seat or let older kids ride their own. Even just walking a section with space to run is good. The wall is wide, flat, and completely safe — no cars.
Tang Paradise (大唐芙蓉园) — A Tang Dynasty theme park with gardens, boat rides, and performances. It's touristy but kids don't care — there's space to run, things to see, and it's designed for Chinese family outings.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda music fountain — At night, the square north of the pagoda has a large musical fountain show. Kids love the water and lights. Free.
Adjusting Your Pace
Scale down museum time. Most kids max out at 60-90 minutes in the Shaanxi History Museum. Focus on the visual exhibits (bronze vessels, terracotta figures, gold artifacts) and skip the detailed text panels.
Build in breaks. Parks inside the walls (Revolution Park, Lianhu Park) have playground areas. The South Gate area has open plazas where kids can run.
Skip Mount Huashan entirely with young children — the trails are steep and genuinely dangerous for small kids. Huaqing Pool works better as a family half-day trip.
Bring snacks. While Xi'an's food is approachable, having familiar snacks on hand prevents hunger meltdowns between meals. Convenience stores everywhere sell packaged snacks, fruit, and drinks.
