Xi'an Photography Guide — The Best Spots and Times for Photos
Where to take the best photos in Xi'an: the golden hour spots, the night photography locations, the hidden angles, and when each location looks its best.
Xi'an's Most Photogenic Spots
Xi'an is one of China's most photogenic cities if you know where and when to shoot. The ancient architecture, the red lanterns, the atmospheric streets, and the dramatic night lighting create incredible photo opportunities. Here's where to go:
City Wall at sunset (South Gate area): The golden light on the ancient stone, the moat reflecting the walls, and the city skyline beyond. Best from the top of the wall itself, about 1 hour before sunset. After dark, the illuminated South Gate from the square below is spectacular.
Bell Tower at night: The Bell Tower is lit up golden and sits in the middle of a roundabout. The best elevated angle is from the southeast corner of Kai Yuan Mall (开元商城), upper floors. Free and easy to access.
Great Tang All Day Mall after dark: The Tang-style buildings, red lanterns, and illuminated pagoda. Shoot from the south end looking north toward the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Go on a weekday evening to avoid the biggest crowds.
Muslim Quarter side streets: The narrow lanes off Beiyuanmen are full of character — steam rising from food stalls, red lanterns, old signage. Best shot during golden hour (late afternoon) when light slants through the narrow streets.
Terracotta Warriors Pit 1: Hard to get a unique shot here since everyone photographs the same view, but go to the far right side of the viewing platform (less crowded) and use a longer lens to compress the rows of soldiers.
Best Times of Day
Golden hour (the hour before sunset): Best for the City Wall, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and street photography in the Muslim Quarter. The warm light on Xi'an's grey and red architecture is beautiful.
Blue hour (20-30 minutes after sunset): Best for the Bell Tower (the sky turns deep blue behind the golden-lit tower) and the Great Tang All Day Mall area.
Early morning (6:30-8:00 AM): Best for the Muslim Quarter waking up, morning park life (tai chi, calligraphy practice), and empty streets inside the walls.
Night (after 8 PM): Best for the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, City Wall South Gate, and Great Tang All Day Mall — all are dramatically illuminated.
Photography Gear & Phone Tips for Xi'an
For the Terracotta Warriors, lens choice matters more than you might think. Pit 1 is vast — a wide-angle (16-24mm equivalent) captures the scale of thousands of soldiers stretching into the distance. But you also want a telephoto (70-200mm or longer) for isolating individual figures, especially the archers and officers with distinct facial expressions. The Warriors are behind a railing and you can't get close, so your phone's 2x or 3x telephoto lens (if it has one) will be useful here.
Tripods are technically not allowed at most Xi'an tourist sites. The Terracotta Warriors site, Shaanxi History Museum, and Bell Tower all prohibit tripods at the entrance. Monopods sometimes slip through, but security may still stop you. For night shots of the Bell Tower and City Wall, brace your camera against a railing or use a small tabletop tripod you can set on a flat surface.
Drones are strictly banned at essentially every major attraction — Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, all museums. Xi'an has military and government facilities scattered throughout the city, and drone enforcement is serious. Leave the drone at home.
Phone camera settings: For night shots of illuminated buildings, use Night Mode (most modern phones have this) and hold steady. Turn off flash — it won't reach the building and ruins the ambient lighting. For food photos in dim Muslim Quarter stalls, Portrait Mode (if available) or tap-to-expose on the brightest part of the food to avoid blown-out highlights.
Bring a power bank (10,000 mAh minimum). Between GPS navigation, translation apps, and photography, your phone battery will drain by 3 PM. Charging outlets in Xi'an cafés are hit or miss, and you don't want to be without maps in an unfamiliar neighborhood.
