Half a Day in Xi'an — What to Do with a Morning or Afternoon
Only have half a day in Xi'an? A layover, a business trip, or an unexpected free window? Here's how to get the most out of a morning or afternoon in the ancient capital.
Half a Day Is Better Than No Days
Half a day in Xi'an — maybe you have a long layover, a free morning before an afternoon flight, or an unexpected window in a business trip. You can't see everything, but you can do one thing well, eat one great meal, and leave with a real taste of the city.
The key decision: do you want the absolute iconic sight (Terracotta Warriors) or the atmospheric cultural experience (the walled city)? You can do one, not both.
Option A: The Warriors (Morning, 6 Hours)
This works if you have a solid 6-hour window including transport. From the city center, it's about 1 hour each way by metro (Line 9), plus 2-2.5 hours at the site. Total commitment: 4.5-5 hours door to door.
7:30 AM: Metro from the city center. 8:15 AM: Arrive at the museum, be through the gate at 8:30. 8:30-11:00 AM: Pits 1, 2, 3, and the Bronze Chariots. 11:00 AM: Head back to the city. 12:00 PM: Back in the city center.
If your half-day is in the afternoon, this is harder — the Warriors close around 5:30 PM (last entry earlier). Starting this at 2 PM is risky. Morning is better.
Option B: The Walled City Experience (Morning or Afternoon, 3-4 Hours)
This is more flexible and works for either a morning or afternoon window. It gives you the atmospheric Xi'an experience without the transport time to the Warriors.
Start at the Bell Tower (photograph from outside, 20 min). Walk west through the Drum Tower arch into the Muslim Quarter. Walk up Beiyuanmen for atmosphere, then turn left onto Dapiyuan for real food. Get roujiamo, liangpi, and suanmeitang.
Then walk south through the old city streets to the South Gate (永宁门, 20 min walk). Go up onto the City Wall. Walk a section — don't try to bike the full loop. The views across the old city from the wall are the essential Xi'an perspective.
Back down and you're at the South Gate metro station, connected to the airport and both train stations.
Total time: 3-4 hours at a comfortable pace. You'll see the best of Xi'an within the walls and eat well.
Between the Options
Terracotta Warriors are the iconic sight — if you've never seen them and may never come back, do Option A. It's the single most extraordinary thing in Xi'an.
The walled city is the atmospheric experience — if you care more about feel, food, and city character than checking off the famous sight, do Option B.
If you can extend your half-day to a full day: do the Warriors in the morning and the walled city in the afternoon. That's the 1-day itinerary in compressed form.
Quick Reference
- Option A
- Terracotta Warriors — 4.5-5 hours door to door, morning only
- Option B
- Walled city circuit — 3-4 hours, flexible timing, no long transport
- Can't Do Both
- Half a day is one or the other, not both
- If You Can Extend
- Warriors morning + walled city afternoon = 1-day itinerary
