Late Arrival in Xi'an — What to Do When You Land at Night
Arriving in Xi'an late at night? A practical guide to getting from the airport or train station to your hotel, where to eat after hours, and how to handle a midnight check-in.
Late Arrival Is Common
Many international flights into Xi'an land in the evening or late at night, and high-speed trains from Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu can deposit you at Xi'an North Station after 10 PM. Late arrival in Xi'an is totally manageable — the infrastructure works after dark — but you'll want a plan.
Here's what to do when you land at 10 PM, 11 PM, or even later.
Airport to Hotel After Dark
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is about 40km northwest of the city center. Late-night options:
Metro Line 14 runs from the airport to the city, connecting to the rest of the metro network. Last train is around 11 PM. Check the exact time for your arrival date. The metro is cheap (8 RMB) and reliable.
Airport shuttle buses run until the last flight arrives — if your flight lands at midnight, there will be a bus. Routes go to the Bell Tower area, the High-Tech Zone, and other major points. About 25 RMB.
Taxis are available 24/7 at the official taxi queue. A ride to the city center takes 40-60 minutes and costs about 120-150 RMB. Have your hotel address in Chinese characters to show the driver.
Didi (Chinese ride-hailing) works at the airport but finding your driver at the pickup point can be tricky if you don't read Chinese. Taxi is more straightforward for late arrivals.
Late Check-In and Late-Night Food
Most Xi'an hotels have 24-hour front desks — late check-in is not a problem. International chains definitely do. Smaller Chinese hotels or guesthouses might have limited reception hours — check before booking if you know you'll arrive late.
For food after 10 PM: the Muslim Quarter is your best bet. Food stalls on the main Beiyuanmen strip stay open until about 11 PM, some later. Dapiyuan side street stalls often close a bit earlier. If you arrive past midnight, 24-hour convenience stores (FamilyMart, 7-Eleven equivalents) sell instant noodles, snacks, and drinks.
Many hotels have 24-hour room service or at least instant noodles at the front desk. Better to eat something simple and save the real food exploration for the next day.
First Morning After Late Arrival
Don't set a 7 AM alarm if you arrived at midnight. Sleep in until you're rested. A late start on your first day is better than dragging yourself through sightseeing exhausted.
If you wake up at 9 or 10 AM, adjust your plan: skip the Terracotta Warriors that day (needs early start) and do the walled city instead — Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter food crawl, City Wall in the afternoon. Save the Warriors for the next day when you can go early.
Xi'an isn't going anywhere. A good first day that starts at 10 AM is better than a miserable one that started at 7 AM on 4 hours of sleep.
