Relaxation in Xi'an — Teahouses, Hot Springs, and Slow Days
Xi'an isn't all crowds and sightseeing. A guide to the city's most relaxing experiences: traditional teahouses, hot springs, quiet temple gardens, and how to build rest days into your trip.
Building Rest Into Your Trip
Xi'an can be intense — the crowds at the Terracotta Warriors, the sensory overload of the Muslim Quarter, the miles of walking on the City Wall. A well-planned Xi'an trip includes deliberate rest, not just collapsing at your hotel when you're exhausted.
Building rest days or rest half-days into your itinerary isn't weakness — it's strategic. You'll enjoy everything more when you're not running on empty. Here's how to relax in Xi'an without wasting your trip.
Teahouses: Xi'an's Best Rest Activity
A traditional Chinese teahouse is the perfect rest-day activity. You sit, you drink tea, you read or talk or just exist. There's no rush. The tea is refilled as long as you stay.
The best teahouse area is Shuyuanmen (书院门), the calligraphy street near the South Gate. The shops sell brushes, ink stones, and art supplies, and the teahouses have ceramic tea sets and quiet courtyard seating. A gongfu tea session costs 50-100 RMB and can last 2-3 hours.
For something simpler: Muslim Quarter tea stalls serving Eight Treasures Tea (八宝茶) in a gaiwan (covered cup). Sweet, floral, and only 10-20 RMB. Good for a 30-minute pause between food stops.
Morning tea in the parks: The most authentic version — bring your own tea or buy a bottle, find a bench in Revolution Park or Lianhu Park, and watch morning life unfold around you.
Other Ways to Slow Down
Hot springs in Lintong (临潼): The area around Huaqing Pool and the Terracotta Warriors has natural hot springs. Several resorts offer day access to outdoor hot spring pools. Best in autumn, winter, or a cool spring day. Combine a morning at the Terracotta Warriors with an afternoon soaking.
Temple gardens: The Small Wild Goose Pagoda temple garden is free, quiet, and beautifully landscaped. Bring a book, find a bench, and stay as long as you like. The Great Mosque in the Muslim Quarter is surprisingly peaceful once you're past the entrance.
City Wall moat park: Walk the tree-lined paths along the moat below the wall. Free, shaded in summer, and you get great views of the wall without the ticket price.
Bookstore + coffee: Several modern bookstores near the South Gate have cafes with good coffee. A good rest-day stop if you need a break from Chinese food and want familiar caffeine.
